Growing up in Lubbock, Texas, Skibell, a skilled artist, has been drawing and painting original artwork since childhood. As early as the third grade, his teachers recognized his strong artistic talent and had him draw murals on the walls for the other students to color in.
He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 1968 and continued for a year in graduate school, majoring in graphic design. Immediately out of school, he went to work as a graphic designer in Dallas.
As a successful commercial real estate developer, he has consistently kept up his artwork from his expansive home studio and has shown his paintings, drawings and prints in various galleries and art shows throughout Texas and New Mexico.
In 2002 Skibell added a Whelan Press to his studio and has been very active in printmaking, primarily etchings, monotypes, and linocuts. His etchings are especially unique because they incorporate the use of collage and drawing with a relatively new process called “Solar plate Etching”.
The creative process that Skibell incorporates into his work includes a wide range of various materials and collage elements that are often found in his fascinating drawings. The collage elements used are often pieces of his past drawings and/or fragments of earlier prints he has made. All the various processes used serve Skibell well in producing his very well received contemporary art.
